What is a Carpenter Ant?

The name ‘carpenter ant’ is a broad term used to describe species of ants that feed and nest in and around wood. While their damage is not typically as severe as a termites, if left untreated carpenter ants can cause significant damage.

Carpenter ants come in a range of sizes all dependent on the role they play within the colony. Queens and male swarmers have wings while the common worker ant does not. A Queen carpenter ant can live up to 15 years and her colony will continue to work and reproduce until she dies.

Why do I have Carpenter Ants?

Carpenter ants use wood as a nesting location for their colony. They do not consume wood, rather they create extensive tunnels to make room for their expanding colony. Carpenter ants are typically found outdoors in wood piles and tree holes, however, under the right conditions they are known to nest in building’s wooden structural supports.

In many cases that carpenter ants are found in a home it is due to a lack of moisture control. Ensuring your crawlspace moisture levels remain below 15% will help prevent carpenter ants from being attracted to your home. It is also good practice to keep wood piles a good distance from your home, ensure tree limbs are cut back, and repair any foundational cracks, as to not create easy access to the home its self.

How do I get rid of Carpenter Ants?

Indicators of carpenter ant nesting include, sawdust like piles around floorboards, visible tunneling damage in crawlspaces, and rustling sounds coming from voids behind a wall.

Carpenter ants can be difficult to control as they are known to move locations when they detect pesticide treatment. The best way to effectively control a colony is with baiting methods. It is recommended to have a qualified pest control specialist aid in controlling carpenter ant colonies as they will have the necessary equipment to properly bait in any area the ants are nesting.
