What is a Silverfish?
Silverfish received their name as they carry a silvery appearance and have fish like-movements. They are nocturnal insects that are most active at night. They prefer to stay hidden and are often found hiding in cabinets, inside books, or in clothing. Evidence of silverfish can be identified by unusual chewing patterns found in the afore mentioned articles.
It is uncommon to find silverfish in large numbers unless there is an ongoing infestation. Females will lay up to 100 eggs in their lifetime and they can live up to 8 years.
Why do I have Silverfish?
Like many insects silverfish prefer dark moist areas. Crawl spaces and basements are common areas they can be found. In instances where they are found inside it is typically due to being brought in with books, clothing, or furniture. Silverfish will feed on book bindings and pages, starchy materials, and fabrics. They are not normally found in great numbers unless there has been a growing population over a long period of time.
How do I get rid of Silverfish?
Preventing silverfish can be accomplished by keeping areas inside the home sanitary. Avoid keeping items such as old papers, books, and food crumbs easily accessible. Proper moisture control in the crawl space, and sealing cracks and crevasses can also aid in control of silverfish.
