What is a Pavement Ant?

Pavement ants are small dark brown or black in color and make their home in cracks and crevasses. They received their name by their habit of creating nests in pavement cracks however, they can be found indoors as well. Pavement ants can cause infestation issues when large numbers of them nest between walls or other interior structures. Pavement ants are commonly seen forming trails as they forage for food together.

Pavement ants can form large colonies as they reproduce rapidly. Nests will remain below ground over the winter and in the spring mating will occur. After rain storms pavements ants will take flight and mate. Up to 5 generations can be produced yearly.

Why do I have Pavement Ants?

Pavement ants are also known to create nests in wall insulation, and under floor boards. They will scavenge for food and can be found working together trailing food back to their nest. They are not picky eaters and will feed on insects, crumbs, and other easily accessible food sources. Pavement ants will communicate with each other and bring other worker ants to aid in  bringing food back to the colony.

Sometimes ant issues go unnoticed if they are hiding under the floor or in between walls. When pest control treatment occurs it can encourage them to retreat from their nest causing what may seem like an ant infestation. However, they will not remain active for long as they continue to react to the treatment.

How do I get rid of Pavement Ants?

Pavement ants can contaminate food and it is important to have practices in place that will aid in their prevention. Keep easily accessible food properly sealed and stored away. If large numbers are found remediation service may be needed.
