Rodents

Most people are familiar with rodents as a household pest, usually thinking of a standard mouse or rat. But would it surprise you to learn that there are actually over 4,500 different species, all sharing the distinctive trait of teeth that never stop growing. And while the world may not agree on . And here in the upstate, we also have to contend with squirrels, opossums, and even the occasional armadillo. But why are these pests a big deal? Not everyone may see a rodent problem, but everybody has to contend with the mosquitoes in the summer. Why worry about these little guys?

While some may find them cute, rodents are capable of a surprising amount of damage to a structure, especially considering their size. With their ever growing incisors, they can afford a chipped tooth. So they use them as their go-to tools. They can chew through wiring, insulation, and even the supports inside the walls! And they carry many diseases that are transferable to humans, such as Leptospirosis, Hantavirus, and Salmonella. Even avoiding direct contact they can contaminate your food if you don’t realize they are digging around your pantry. So how can you know if there’s a problem?

There are a few tell-tale signs that you can keep an eye out for to identify if they have been in your home. The most obvious of which can be holes nibbled in the walls or flooring. These are pathways chewed out to allow rodents to gain entry again and again. This allows them to come back on scavenging runs, looking for food and water when the coast is clear. Another sign, and likely the most important one, is if you see any droppings or unexplained stale smells coming from the nooks and crannies throughout the home. This could mean those varmints have gotten used to coming through, or may have a nest nearby. But a lesser known sign is finding shredded paper, fabric, or even dried plant matter appearing around the property. The rodents common to the upstate are largely nesting creatures so these materials may be part of their collection to make their nests.
