What is a Grub?
Grubs are the larval stage of several kinds of beetles. They are known to be destructive to turf grasses as they feed on root systems. Grubs do not seem to have a preference to a specific grass type and can cause damage to residential lawns, commercial landscapes, and sports fields.
Beetles will fly into the air, mate, then lay their eggs in the soil during early summer. Their young, grubs, will pass through 4 stages of metamorphosis before they become a beetle. During their maturing stages grubs remain in the soil feeding on root systems.
Why do I have Grubs?
Grubs are typically just below the surface of your grass. They can be easily located by pulling up a portion of your turf grass. If it pulls up easily it is evidence that the root system has been fed on by grubs and the grass will likely start browning and dying shortly. Grubs may come to the surface of your lawn after heavy rain storms as they are escaping the flooding soil.
Grubs are most common in the late summer months. They tend to prefer nutrient rich soil that is well taken care of and can easily be maneuvered through. Regularly aerated lawns are preferable to grubs as the soil is not too dense and root systems are able to travel deeper making them easier for grubs to locate.
How do I get rid of Grubs?
Grubs will not go away on their own. Since they are the larval stage of beetles they will continue to re-infest year after year if they are not properly treated and prevented. An insecticide lawn blanket treatment that will eradicate active grub populations and prevent any eggs from hatching is a great way to end an infestation.
